Patients experiencing complications following vaginal mesh surgery
Vaginal mesh surgery is one of several ways to treat stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and pelvic organ prolapse (POP). For many women experiencing the distressing symptoms of SUI and POP, surgical procedures using vaginal mesh have provided an effective form of treatment, which is less invasive than alternative surgical procedures.
There is published evidence to suggest good outcomes for several procedures using vaginal mesh, over the periods studied, but complications are also recognised.
If you are experiencing problems after vaginal mesh surgery and have had your procedure in Northern Ireland, in the first instance, you should make an appointment with your GP to discuss your concerns.
If your problems could be related to vaginal mesh surgery, your GP will refer you to the Health and Social Care Trust where your surgery was performed.
Each Health and Social Care Trust has been asked to put arrangements in place for you to be seen promptly by a consultant with experience in vaginal mesh surgery.
