Protecting publich health

The Health Protection Service, plays a vital role in protecting the population from infections and environmental hazards. This is done through:

  • surveillance and monitoring of diseases and public health risks,
  • operational support and advice for health professionals,
  • education, training and research to improve health protection strategies.

Who delivers the service?

The Health Protection Service is provided by a multi-disciplinary team, including:

  • doctors and nurses,
  • scientists and surveillance specialists,
  • Emergency planners,
  • administrative staff.

These experts work together to detect, manage, and prevent health threats in Northern Ireland.

Health protection duty room

Location: Public Health Agency, Linenhall Street, Belfast.

The health protection duty room is the first point of contact for health professionals and agencies dealing with health protection incidents or queries during working hours.

  • The consultant-led health protection teams focus on key public health areas, responding to emerging threats.
  • Surge capacity for major incidents is supported by staff across the PHA.
